#11 Navigating Change

When theory and reality collide.

Having made the decision to close the online Community and create a different format that will better enable people to see the breakthroughs and transformations that have always been the focus of Fovea, a number of challenges have arisen for me. It’s easy to say what I think I believe but it’s in the testing that I start to see whether those beliefs hold and what obstacles there are to overcome in order to stay on the journey and not decommit. From the early stages, Gary and I both believed that if it was meant to be, Fovea would be a success and that lack of success meant nothing about us personally. However, I have experienced a sense of disappointment that the planning, preparation and hard work we put in wasn’t taking us towards the destination we had committed to and are passionate about.

Whilst Gary quickly moved into creating a revised Community, I spent time dwelling on questions such as why we had made certain decisions, why we hadn’t seen what so quickly became evident once we’d launched, what we should or could have done differently. I’ve been examining my disappointment and working out how to increase my motivation to keep going.

The first step in moving forward was to process my emotions and then choose to let them go. Then I took a dose of my own medicine – in this case by reviewing some of our own video content. The theory is one thing but applying it to a real situation has helped me to see new perspectives and to make different choices. Below are some of the things that seemed most relevant to my situation:

  • Looking back to ask questions about why we did certain things didn’t provide any useful answers, it just delayed the journey. Looking back to focus on what we have learned, what we have already achieved and celebrating this, helped my motivation.

  • It’s normal to come across obstacles, especially when pursuing something new, and there are ways to overcome them. Choosing to see setbacks as opportunities to do things even better is powerful.

  • Creating a new future, declaring and committing to it and remembering why that future is important to me is powerful in overcoming obstacles.

  • It’s so easy for me to compare myself with others and not see the unique value I bring. Seeing beyond my stories about what I can do, unlocks new possibilities.

I feel sure I’ll be more powerful in walking shoulder to shoulder with others on their journey as I continue to find more growth and freedom in my own journey.
